Maserati Levante: A lot of car for the money?

With each and every manufacturer jumping onto the SUV-launching spree, it was about time we saw one from Maserati, a manufacturer known to design special vehicles with an exotic design and a trident moniker, which alone, is enough to make people pry over the windows. Good decision, then, to add infrared – and prying eyeballs – proof glasses, it seems.

So, of course, the Levante is the very first SUV from the manufacturer in the world. And, on top of that, Maserati also sells it in India too. Therefore, does the Maserati Levante make for a perfect recipe for your neighbour to wish he/she wouldn’t have signed the check for that expensive Mercedes-Benz – or even a Porsche, for that matter?

Well, the Maserati Levante is a luxury crossover that is meant to tackle smooth tarmac than off-road trails. And that’s something which is clearly reflected in its design. As for its history, the uber-luxury SUV made its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, while commercial sales commenced in the second half of that year, followed by Maserati launching it here in the first quarter of 2018.

So, if you always seemed to have your eyes set on the Levante – a properly justified thing – here’s the full low-down for you to make an informed decision. Read on.

Specifications

By the way it looks, the Levante has all the characteristic elements of a Maserati – aggressively tapered headlights, a massive radiator grille with vertical chrome slots, frameless doors, tapered back window and a stubby rear end. It might be one of the most desirable SUVs out there, at least for a niche audience.

As for the overall dimensions of this Maserati, it measures in at 5,003mm of length, 1,968mm of width, and 1,679mm of height. The standard 18-inch wheels are separated by a wheelbase of 3,004mm. Apart from that, it has a respectablefuel tank capacity of 80-litres and a boot space capacity of 580-litres.

Under the hood, the first Maserati SUV comes powered with two diesel and a single petrol engine. Starting with the petrol engine, it’s a 3.0-litre Twin Turbo – direct injection GDI V6 petrol mill, good for 350bhp and 500Nm of torque. In the higher-spec S trim, however, the same mill is tuned to churn out 430bhp and 580Nm of torque. Regardless of the trim, it comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

The entry-level diesel engine is a 3.0-litre V6 unit, which makes 271bhp and 600Nm of torque. Next in line, too, is a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, which is good for 345bhp and 500Nm in its lower state of tune and 424bhp and 580Nm in its higher state of tune. Both the diesel engines come paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission too.

Mileage

In the case of fuel efficiency, do not expect the Maserati to deliver any mind-numbing numbers. Of course, the diesel engine here is rated to deliver better fuel efficiency around 10km/l. As for the petrol engine, expect somewhere around 4-5km/l.

Features

The Levante sports adjustable suspension with electronically controlled damping and four corner air-springs with five different ride levels. Moreover, electronic aids like Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) package, which includes new active functions such as Highway Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition, come standard.

Colours

The Levante, as of mid-2020, comes in nine shades, namely,Nero,Bianco,Nero Ribelle,Grigio Maratea,Grigio,Rame,Blu Passione,Blu Emozione, and Bianco Alpi.
